Vertical Blind Slats

Maintenance Of Vertical Blind Slats

Window blinds are often used as window coverings. Unlike curtains, you can control the amount of light or air that goes into the room by turning a stick which controls the direction of the slats. Vertical blind slats can be made from a variety of materials including plastic, wood, metal or fabric. Each type of material is enticing in its own way. Maintenance or replacement of broken vertical slats is different depending on the material and the severity of the damage. A careful inspection of the slats can help determine the options for cleaning, repairing or replacement.

Vertical blind slats do not hold as much dirt or dust as horizontal slats do. This means if you have vertical slats, you will not need to put as much effort in cleaning them. However, you still need to clean the slats on a regular basis. This prevents the dirt or dust from becoming too heavy and increasing the cleaning time. Cleaning the slats or vanes at least once a month is recommended.

Check the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning. The list of instructions can determine whether you need to do any special techniques when cleaning the slats. In general, the cleaning process is simple and straightforward. First, remove the slats from the hanger. This will make it easier to clean each slat thoroughly. If you are cleaning fabric blinds, you will need to remove the weights at the bottom of each piece as well. With vertical blind slats made from aluminum or vinyl, you can clean the slats using a sponge soaked in a solution of soap and water. Do not soak the slats themselves or you would risk removing some of the chemicals used to make it flame retardant and soil repellant. In the case of fabric, you can use a washing machine to clean the fabric. However, you should not use a dryer to remove the excess moisture. You should also avoid wringing the fabric or folding the vanes. Instead, use a towel to soak up the excess moisture and hang them to dry. Once the slat or vane has dried completely, you can place them back on the hanger. You may need to check to how the slats line up by opening and closing them a few times.

If you are dealing with damaged vertical blind slats or vanes, you will need to bring actual samples to shops that sell replacements. This will allow you to inspect the slats up close and see which slats match in color perfectly. Online shops also offer replacements. The problem is that there is no way of knowing how accurate the color is represented on the website or on your monitor.

Plastic slats are more prone to tears as compared to vertical blind slats made from aluminum or wood. Once you find a rip where it is attached to the hanger, the slat may fall off. If you do not wish to purchase a replacement, there is one simple trick you can try. Check the other end of the slat to see its condition. If it is still intact, you can attach that end to the hanger instead. To make a hole, you can use a regular hole punch. Although the shape may be different, the size of the hole is similar to that of the original.
