Cleaning Vertical Blinds

Simple Tips For Cleaning Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are popular for covering windows in homes and offices. These blinds have the appearance of draperies, and you can use them to control light and even the temperature within your home. They are perfect for large windows and blend extremely well with French and sliding patio doors since you can pull them to one side like draperies. Vertical blinds come in different types of materials, including fabric, aluminum, vinyl and wood. Here are some tips for cleaning vertical blinds that you need to know.

Regular cleaning of vertical blinds is essential as cleaning heavily soiled blinds will be much more tedious and time-consuming. If you have acquired new blinds, be sure to come up with a regular cleaning schedule in order to keep the blinds in perfect condition. Certainly, these blinds may not gather dust as much as horizontal blinds; however, you should ensure that you dust or vacuum them on a regular basis. There is an attachment for the vacuum made specifically for cleaning vertical blinds; it resembles a thick fork and you can fit it in any vacuum hose in order to vacuum clean your blinds. Done frequently, dusting and vacuuming your blinds will keep them dust free.

Sometimes, if you do not perform routine maintenance, or if you purchase a home with already existing dusty blinds, then you may want to perform a thorough cleaning for your vertical blinds. Cleaning the blinds while they are still hanging is possible; however, this is a challenging process requiring protection for the windows as well as the floor underneath the blinds. Therefore, removing the vanes will allow you to do a more thorough cleaning. To do this, you will need to remove each vane from its hook, and then disconnect the vanes from the bottom chain. Most fabric vanes come with a weight in a pocket at the bottom of the vane; be sure to remove this before cleaning.

You can clean vinyl or aluminum vertical blinds with a sponge and soapy water. Although aluminum vertical blinds are usually firm, be cautious not to bend or handle them roughly. If the blinds are severely soiled, begin by dusting them first before scrubbing them with a sponge from one end down to the other end. Rinse your blinds with clean water after scrubbing. You can easily clean these blinds outdoors on a warm day with the help of your garden hose, before leaving them to dry in the sun. If the blinds are white, you may want to add some bleach to the water during cleaning. Never use abrasive cleaners on these types of blinds to avoid scratching. If you want to clean your blinds indoors, then the bathtub is the right place to do the job. Dry the vanes with a towel before hanging them back.

If the vertical blinds are made of fabric, then you might consider cleaning them using your washing machine; however, be sure to read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions before embarking on the exercise. If you can wash them on your machine, then put them through a cold wash on the delicate cycle, using liquid detergent from fine washables. If the fabric has strong stains, spray the spots first with a pre-wash treatment or spot cleaner. Never dry the blinds on a clothes dryer; instead, hang them to dry. If the blinds come out wrinkled after washing, then remove the wrinkles by steaming the blinds. After hanging your blinds back, replace the weights at the bottom of the vanes. However, if you cannot wash your blinds in a machine, be sure to spot clean them manually. Start off by thoroughly vacuuming the vanes before spraying the stains with a spot cleaner. Brush the stubborn spots with a brush or cloth. You can spot clean the blinds while they are still hanging.

One of the most involving, yet necessary, chores in keeping your room spic and span is cleaning vertical blinds. Blinds represent your house both inside and out, with your house representing you. Keeping vertical blinds clean is easy if you create and follow a schedule of regular cleaning and maintenance.
